About
Home Internet Threats
The major concern with home computer users
is the protection against virus and spyware threats, theft of personal
confidential information and security of financial details. NetSec can
provide dedicated IT support and solutions for all of those.
Virus Threats
Virus generally can be divided into three
categories: destructive, Trojan horse and denial of service. Destructive
viruses cause data file corruption, file damage and system failure.
Trojan horses open certain ports when the computer connects to the
Internet and leave the computer potentially vulnerable to other attachs.
Denial of service renders the computer usage to nonusable level. Virus
is infectious from one computer to another through exchange of file or
email.
Spyware Threats
Spyware originally was created for marketing
purposes. The reason why spyware is not detectable by many antivirus
software is it is not viral. Spyware is not infectious between
computers. Spyware can only be installed on the computer by users
knowingly or unknowingly executing spyware installation software.
Spyware tracks user Internet surfing
behavior and report to spyware makers. These surfing statistics are used
to deliver buyer specific marketing materials. The most common form of
such materials are pop-up advertisements.
Spyware has been heavily abused and many of
them are designed to create a denial of service attack on the computers.
One such form is browser hijack (parasite). Browser hijack takes over
the computer Internet browser security loopholes and essentially bring
the Internet browsing ability to zero. When the following symptoms
appears: your homepage is set to a search page and popup ad windows
appear frequently or at extreme fast interval, your browser has been
hijacked.

Spamming
Spamming means unsolicited emails are
randomly sent to computer user email addresses. Email addresses are
extracted from various sources, either collected through a website or by
software scanning millions of web pages at the same time.
Spam can be used for three purposes:
marketing, virus infection or theft of personal information. Marketing
emails delivering advertisements are a very high return on investment
form of marketing. These emails can be legitimately sent due to a
subscription or randomly sent without recipients' permission. Virus
containing emails deceive users to execute attachments which contain
viruses. Finally, emails which contains warning from authority and
reliable sources which require users to submit their personal (e.g.
banking login and password) information are a common fraud scheme that
have stolen millions of credit card or banking details from
inexperienced users.
